GFCIs and Why Your Home Needs Them

Water and electricity are a dangerous combo. That’s why GFCI outlets are required in areas like bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and outside. These outlets shut off power instantly when a fault is detected — potentially saving lives.

What’s a GFCI Outlet?

It stands for Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter. It looks like a regular outlet but has two buttons: TEST and RESET.

Where You Need Them:

  • Bathrooms
  • Kitchens
  • Laundry areas
  • Garages and basements
  • Outdoor outlets

How to Test a GFCI:

  1. Press the “Test” button – the outlet should immediately cut power to any connected devices.
  2. Press the “Reset” button – this should restore power.

    Testing should only be done by an adult who understands basic electrical safety.
    Do not attempt this if the outlet appears damaged, wet, or burned.
    If the outlet doesn’t trip when tested or won’t reset, it may be faulty and should be inspected or replaced by a licensed electrician.
